Exploring Capri with a pushchair

Capri is known for its glamour, it's beautiful deep blue waters, expensive shops and even more expensive yachts. I was very lucky to spend my 16th birthday on Capri as part of a high school trip, but for the life of me I can't remember much about it so it was lovely to return with my family many years later to explore a little piece of it.

All the guidebooks say that Capri is steep. Steep cliffs, steep paths and steep steps all over the island so we were a little worried about taking a pushchair with us. We nearly stuck with the baby carrier and left the pushchair at home but actually it was entirely doable with a pushchair.

We took a quick ferry from Sorrento Port, buying our tickets last minute at the harbour. The journey only took about 30minutes with views of the Amalfi coast and the bay of Naples as you go. The ferry was easily accessible with a pushchair and our toddler was free of charge.

Escaping the crowds

Capri felt very busy in the Port so we escaped to the old town in the hills above. We took the funicular railway - you will need to fold the pushchair up as it can be a little cramped in the carriages. It was super cheap at E2.40/one way per adult with kids free. We did pay for the pushchair as luggage at E2.40 each way but I'm not sure if we actually needed too in hindsight. There were steps in places and we had to carry the pushchair but there did look to be wheelchair ramps.

Capri was far more accessible than I thought, there are lots of lovely narrow pathways and passageways criss-crossing the town with very few steps, even on the steepest paths - and some of them are steep! We headed away from the busiest streets and found lovely quiet pathways overlooking both sides of the island with sea views all around. Our toddler was able to toddle along on his own exploring the pathways without having to navigate crowds or lots of other people whilst we got to watch him explore the beautiful town.

Lunch at Lo Sfizio

We found a lovely restaurant tucked away down a hill side pathway, about 10minutes from the main square called Lo Sfizio, and it was beautiful. It had seating inside and out, with air conditioning inside which was perfect on the super hot day we went. The staff were outstanding with our toddler, lots of interaction and engagement with him, the waiter even found him a balloon to play with. We ordered delicious steak and pasta as our main meals whilst our toddler enjoyed demolishing the bread basket followed by parmigiana croquettes off the main menu - what a life!

We weren't sure how long we would want on Capri so we didn't book our return ticket until we were getting near ready to leave and I just did it online, picking a time that suited us from one of the many ferry operators available. Allow plenty of time to get the funicular down from the top, it's only a short journey but there was a queue and we had to wait a while for our turn. Once at the bottom, we struggled to find our ferry operator as they were away from the main ticket counters so it was a bit of a hot frantic rush to find the ferry in the end but we made it with 5 minutes to spare.
