Pompeii and pushchairs

Was not the easiest trip we had in Italy. Funnily enough Pompeii wasn’t designed with pushchairs in mind when it was built over 2000 years ago.

We ummed and arghed over leaving the pushchair in the luggage lockers and just taking the baby carrier but it was pretty hot when we visited and the thought of carrying a sweaty toddler round didn’t appeal to us or him so we stuck with the pushchair.

Once up the first long stony ramp, it was generally ok with the pavements still in tact and navigable by pushchair. Beware though that the main roads are lumpy and bumpy with large boulders in place to act as stepping stones over the roads so we did have to carry the pushchair at times over these.

We visited later in the afternoon to avoid the heat but it was still hot with very little shade provided anywhere so the sunshade on the pushchair was really invaluable. The site is open until 7pm with last entry at 5:30pm which was great for trying to avoid the heat of the day.

Pompeii was far bigger than we thought and we wanted to see the amphitheatre etc which was of course right at the other end of the site. I ended up using Google Maps to find our way through the site which might be my favourite holiday fact ever! We exited at the far end of the site and still had a 20 minute walk back along the perimeter fence to the train station.

Luckily the train station is right by the entrance to the site so you shouldn't get lost once you get off the train. A word of warning though, if you have a standard train ticket, you won't be able to board the Campania Express train when it stops so you might have to wait a little longer for your train.
